NomiPad vs Notepad++

Notepad++ is one of the best-loved editors on Windows, free and open source. Where the two differ is huge files, platforms and Markdown.

Huge files

Notepad++ reads a file into memory before showing it. That is fast for everyday files, and it is why a multi-gigabyte log makes it freeze or refuse; its forum threads on the subject1 usually end with a recommendation to install a big-file plugin, which opens the file in read-only chunks.

NomiPad maps the file instead of reading it, shows the first screen right away and indexes the lines in the background. You can jump to line 7,000,000 before indexing gets there, search the whole file with regex, then edit and save: only the changed part is rewritten, into a temporary file that replaces the original in one step. See the measured numbers.

Encodings and line endings

Both editors respect a file’s encoding and line endings. NomiPad detects them on open, shows them in the status bar and writes them back unchanged, including UTF-16 and Windows-1252, with a question before anything would change. It also refuses to overwrite a file that another program changed after you opened it, and asks instead.

Which one to use

  • Stay with Notepad++ for everyday editing on Windows if you rely on its plugins or macros.
  • Add NomiPad for the logs and dumps that are too big for it, for editing them without a read-only plugin, and on macOS or Linux, where Notepad++ doesn’t run.

Both are free to use, so keeping both is a reasonable answer.
