Where NomiPad fits among text editors

Great editors, all of them. This is where each one stands on what NomiPad is built for: gigabyte files, safe saves, live Markdown and code.

Which one should you use?

You need to open a log that is hundreds of megabytes or more

Use NomiPad. It memory-maps the file instead of reading it into memory, so the first screen of a 1 GiB log is ready in about a millisecond, and the file itself is never loaded into memory. You can also edit it and save it: a save rewrites only the part you changed. See how we measured.

You write code all day in a project

Keep your IDE. VS Code and Sublime Text have extensions, debuggers and project search that NomiPad deliberately doesn’t. NomiPad is the companion for the files they struggle with: the 2 GB log, the huge CSV or SQL dump, the file in an encoding you must not break. NomiPad and VS Code explains the split.

You’re on Windows and use Notepad++

Notepad++ is excellent for everyday files, free and open source. On very large files its community’s usual advice is a plugin. NomiPad opens them natively and also runs on macOS and Linux. NomiPad and Notepad++ goes into detail.

You write in Markdown

Typora and NomiPad both render Markdown as you type, in the same window. NomiPad keeps the file plain .md on disk, with no vault or database, and also opens multi-gigabyte files; Typora doesn’t render files above a default size limit. See Markdown in NomiPad.

You use EmEditor on Windows

EmEditor is built for enormous files and has CSV tools NomiPad doesn’t. NomiPad is simpler and runs on macOS and Linux too. NomiPad vs EmEditor has the details.

You only need to jot something down on a Mac

TextEdit is already there and fine for that. NomiPad is for when the file is big, the encoding matters, or you want Markdown and code highlighting. More in a Notepad alternative.

What NomiPad doesn’t do

No plugins, no sync, no mobile app, no AI features and no real-time collaboration. If you need those, one of the editors above is the better choice. NomiPad is a notepad that tries to be a very good one.
